30 Days of SPN - Day 10

You kind of begin to wonder how John managed to die only once.

Nevermind.

(Profuse thanks to
[info]blacklid, who kindly pointed out my glaring mistake without even chortling. I wonder if I can still claim travel-fatigue? Also, I watched Fried Green Tomatoes last night, and that always leaves me a mess. Pick an excuse, any excuse....)

Day 10 - Your favourite Sam/other death scene
Hm, okay. Considering we only have a total of three [Eta: four. Damnit. Clearly, I lose track of all the deaths on this bloody Show. Lightning strike. Damnit.] Sam death scenes, I understand the option. But it does rather put one on the spot, because how can you leave out Sam? But how do you miss the opportunity to talk about the deaths of other characters? For that matter, how do you choose between them all (and we’re back to me flailing, again, and not in the good way)?

So, for Sam: definitely the last one. I mean, I liked the sudden, brutal quality of Dark Side, and his first death, at the end of All Hell pt 1, was just the most heartwrenching thing ever. (It’s also interesting that his first death and his last death were both in the peace that comes of having beaten his demons; after refusing to become a killer, in fighting Jake, and having overcome his destiny with Lucifer himself.) But in a lot of ways, the first two deaths are more about Dean’s journey or failures than they are about Sam. Which means if I made Sam’s first death my favourite, it would be because of Dean. Which doesn’t make sense, to me.

But in Swan Song Sam confronts the pinacle of the powers that have manipulated his entire life, sought to control and use him for their own ends, and defeats it. When he subdues Lucifer and turns his possession against him, trapping Lucifer in his own body and in the cage in the Pit, it is Sam’s supreme moment in life and in death. This death is completely about Sam’s journey, and is an amazing scene (which I confess I haven’t had the strength to try to watch again), and is in all ways deserving of being my favourite Sam death scene.

Now, as to “other” deaths, my first instinct is to go with Jo and Ellen, for obvious reasons, and that’s probably going to be the winner. But it would be wrong to overlook John, too, and the incredibly John way he had of both dying and saying goodbye to his sons.... Anyway. Enough with the death and the crying already! It's like nothing else ever happens on Show!

(Mind you, at least they managed to confine themselves to just the one apocalypse. Way to exercise self-control, Writers!)

I love watching your brain at work. *chin in hands*

But, but, but... *droopy party hat* John died twice... in the very beginning. His death kicked off the whole dadgummed thing. Not that he knows it...

That will teach me not to run fact check in my head on my flippant, throw-away comments. Bloody hell. *facepalm*

I guess my brain kind of just closed off the John!canon file around the end of S2. When will I learn?!?

*fixy-fixes* Thank you!

I also greatly enjoy these posts of yours :)

I haven't been able to rewatch Swan Song either, and Sam's first death is much more familiar to me (many of my favourite vids feature it). But yes, the element of choice and fighting back in the S5 finale is very powerful.

Thank you! :)

Sam's first death is just ... I don't even know. I love it so hard. But I love Sam in his third death the most. Team Free Will FTW! \o/
