30 Days of SPN - Day 20

Okay, well, obviously no regular “Previously, on Supernatural ...” or “Dad wants us to pick up where he left off. Saving people, hunting things!” is going to cut the mustard here. Only the season finales and one or two exceptional early or late episode recaps are in the running.

Day 20 - Your favourite recap
It should be noted that they do an arresting job of their special recaps; any time they use an actual rock song behind it, they’re like the very best fanvids possible. I love that from S3 on each opener has been set to an AC/DC song, although S3 with “Hells Bells” is probably my favourite of those, because the song is so dramatic and thematically bang on.

But really, the very best recaps are the finales. Of the “Wayward Son”s (and I am definitely counting Salvation as the first of the finale two-parter; I like the Devil’s Trap recap set to “Fight the Good Fight” a whole lot, but it’s not the same) I have to go with All Hell Breaks Loose, pt 2.

I don’t whether to be worried, or just feel confirmed in picking S2 as my favourite, that so many of my other favourites end up being from it, even only by the most slender of margins. I think part of the appeal is simple story flow; S2 was the hinge of momentum and complexity in the larger arc, and that makes all its elements just work somehow.

Case in point is the finale recap: they didn’t need to break the recap’s flow with too much dialogue just to explain what on earth was going on. That allowed the imagery to tell the story more with the music, and it just meshed, at every beat. It was also moving at the gut level, less cerebral and abstract at that point, which complements the music more anyway. And it was still just family, still mostly simple, so that all the energy of the recap could be directed toward that one thing.

And then it crescendoes with Sam’s death and Dean’s despairing cry and the cruelly perfect chorus: Carry on my wayward son/There’ll be peace when you are done/Lay your weary head to rest/Don’t you cry no more. Which, for my money, is the perfect convergence. Although they’ve come damn close, they’ve never topped that combination.

Now I'm wanting to go back and watch these recaps. But if I do that, it's inevitable that I'll get sucked into watching the whole show and maybe get some crazy idea like starting at the beginning and watching all of the episodes again in order. :)

Yes, it's a problem. I went back and watched a few (S1 were really incredibly boring up until Salvation), and I was definitely feeling that pull.

SPN marathon at fleurlb's house! Yay! – Well, it's something to do while you grow steadily rounder ;)

I think I want to save the SPN marathon until after Lil'Bit is born. We've been told by friends that there is a lot of sitting around that requires both hands (like feeding the baby) and it helps to have a lot of content stored up to entertain you in your zombie-like state. SPN would be perfect for that.

Well, that makes sense. I guess I'll just keep trying to whet your appetite in that case! :)
